Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to book an acne appointment?
No referral is needed. You can book directly online, by phone, or by email.
Do you treat patients under 18?
Yes, we see under-18s at all our clinics. For procedures that require more tolerance (like verruca freezing), we usually recommend a minimum age of 10. A parent or guardian must attend the appointment with any patient under 16.
Do you treat hormonal acne?
Yes—many of our patients experience acne linked to hormonal changes such as menstruation, pregnancy, peri-menopause or menopause. We offer both topical and oral treatments, including hormonal therapy if needed.
Can I be prescribed Roaccutane (Isotretinoin)?
Yes, if it’s appropriate for your acne. One of our clinicians will assess your skin and overall health, and explain any necessary monitoring e.g. such as blood tests. Only specifically trained doctors are able to prescribe this medication.
How long will it take to see results from treatment?
This varies by treatment. Some topical treatments show improvement in 4–8 weeks, while oral medications or isotretinoin may take a few months. Your clinician will explain what to expect based on your treatment plan.
Is a prescription included in the cost of the appointment?
Yes—if a prescription is clinically appropriate, it will be issued during your appointment.
As a private patient, you’ll pay for prescriptions directly at the pharmacy. Some medications are cheaper than NHS prices, but others—like isotretinoin—can be more expensive. Your doctor will discuss options and may help you work with your NHS GP for repeat prescriptions to reduce long-term costs.
Can I still use NHS services for follow-up or prescriptions?
Yes—in some cases, we can suggest a treatment plan that your NHS GP may agree to continue. This can be helpful in reducing ongoing medication costs.
Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?
You’ll need to check with your insurer before your appointment. Some providers will reimburse private dermatology consultations, but you may need to bring documentation for the doctor to sign.
Please note: all of our doctors are GMC-registered GPs or Dermatology Consultants—so you must clarify this with your insurer in advance.
Do you offer acne scar treatment?
We don’t currently offer cosmetic or laser treatments for acne scarring, but our clinicians can advise on ways to reduce further scarring and manage active acne effectively to minimise long-term impact.
