Types of Cysts
Sebaceous cysts
Sebaceous (Epidermoid) Cysts: These benign lumps contain a thick, whitish substance called keratin and commonly appear on the back, neck, and face. Proper removal by an experienced doctor is essential to prevent recurrence.
Pilar cysts
Pilar Cysts: Often found on the scalp, these cysts are usually hereditary. Unlike sebaceous cysts, pilar cysts have thicker walls, making them easier to remove intact.
What is the process of cyst removal at Oxona Healthcare?
At Oxona Health, we provide sebaceous cyst removal services across our clinics in Oxford, St Albans, and Didcot. Our comprehensive process includes:
Your pre-operative appointment:
Most patients will need to attend a pre-operative appointment in the first instance. During this appointment, the doctor will:
- Diagnosis: Confirm the cyst is benign and suitable for removal.
- Discussion: Outline treatment options and expected outcomes, including potential scarring.
- Risk Assessment: Review medical history and discuss any potential risks.
- Transparent Pricing: Provide a clear quote covering all aspects of the procedure and follow-up care.
Following this you should choose whether to proceed or not. Our prices quoted are valid for three months from the date of your appointment so there is no pressure to rush the surgery. If you wish to progress to booking the surgery the doctor and our reception team will be on hand to help.
We can book your wound check and stitch removal appointments at the same time, and these are included in the surgery price quoted.
The day of your procedure:
On the day of your procedure, you will have been given an appointment time. Please arrive 5 minutes early to avoid any unnecessary stress.
- Arriving at the Clinic
The doctor will call you from the waiting room and check in on how you are feeling. If you are nervous or anxious, please let us know—we always have a clinical assistant on hand to support you. It is completely normal to feel nervous, and we are here to help make you as comfortable as possible. - Consent & Final Checks
Before proceeding, the doctor will:- Go through the procedure again and answer any last-minute questions.
- Discuss the consent form, which outlines the risks of minor surgery.
- Ask about any changes in medication since your last consultation. You can bring your medication with you or simply show a photo of your prescription.
- Anaesthesia & Comfort Options
- When you’re ready, the doctor will inject a small amount of local anaesthetic under the skin.
- The doctor will test the area to ensure you cannot feel anything before starting.
- During the procedure, you can listen to music, watch something on a device, or even watch the surgery itself—whatever makes you feel most at ease.
- The Procedure & Stitches
- Once the area is fully numb, the doctor will remove the cyst along with its sac, ensuring minimal risk of recurrence.
- Most cyst removals require stitches. In some cases, these may be dissolvable, while in others, you will need to return 7–14 days later for stitch removal.

FAQs
Is sebaceous cyst removal painful?
No – The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel pain during removal.
Will there be a scar after cyst removal?
Some scarring is possible, but our doctors use fine surgical techniques to minimise scarring. Over time, scars typically fade significantly.
What happens if a cyst isn’t fully removed?
If only the contents are drained, the cyst may regrow. That’s why we always remove the entire cyst sac to prevent recurrence.
How long does recovery take?
Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. Full healing takes 1–3 weeks, depending on the cyst’s size and location.
Can sebaceous cysts go away on their own?
No – Once formed, a sebaceous cyst will not go away without treatment.
Are sebaceous cysts cancerous?
No, they are benign. However, if you notice rapid growth, pain, or changes, we recommend getting it checked by a doctor.
Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?
Yes, all patients require a pre-op consultation prior to any surgical treatment. During this appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, and the doctor will discuss the procedure and outcomes, while also providing an exact costing. The GP may provide different options for surgical treatments, these tend to have different outcomes. You are advised to take your time to consider the available options and best outcomes for you.
Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?
You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
How can I prevent the development of sebaceous cysts?
Scalp (pilar) cysts are wholly genetic in origin and impossible to prevent. Preventing epidermoid cysts primarily involves maintaining good skin hygiene and minimising factors that can lead to blockages of hair follicles.
It’s essential to keep your skin clean, avoid excessive oil-based skincare products, and refrain from picking or squeezing existing pimples or blackheads, as these actions can potentially lead to cyst formation. Additionally, protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure can help prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of cysts.
