More About Keloid Scars
Keloid scars form when the body produces too much collagen during the healing process, causing raised, thickened scar tissue that extends beyond the original wound.
They can develop after cuts, burns, acne, piercings, or even minor injuries—and are more common in people with a family history of keloids.
Factors such as skin type, age, and tension at the wound site can also increase the likelihood of keloid formation. The chest, back, shoulders and earlobes are particularly prone.
Not everyone is equally affected, and keloid scarring can vary greatly between individuals.
How Are Keloid Scars Treated?
Keloid scars can be difficult to treat, but a number of options are available to reduce their size, soften their texture, and ease discomfort. Results can vary between individuals.
Silicone Gel or Sheets: These over-the-counter products are often used to help flatten and soften keloid scars over time.
Injections: At Oxona, we use steroid and fluorouracil (5-FU) injections to reduce inflammation and flatten raised tissue. A course of treatments is usually required.
Cryotherapy: Freezing the scar with liquid nitrogen can shrink the keloid. This treatment is available at our Oxford and St Albans clinics and may be repeated for best results.
Surgical Removal: For some keloids—especially on the ear—surgical excision may be suitable. This is usually followed by another treatment (e.g. injections or magnets) to prevent regrowth.
Neodymium Magnets: When worn consistently, magnets can help flatten earlobe keloids. This method is only appropriate for keloids caused by ear piercings.

What our patients think
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a pre-operative consultation?
Yes, all patients require a pre-operative consultation before treatment. This appointment allows your doctor to:
- Assess the keloid
- Explain your treatment options and outcomes
- Provide a personalised quote based on your case
- Answer any questions you may have
You’ll be encouraged to take your time to consider the best approach for you.
Do you treat all skin tones?
Yes. Our clinicians are experienced in treating keloids on all skin types and tones, and will tailor your treatment to suit your individual skin characteristics.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies depending on the size, location, and type of treatment.
- Injections are often done in a course of 2–4 sessions
- Cryotherapy and magnets may require repeat applications
- Surgical removal is typically a one-off procedure, followed by follow-up care
Is there any downtime after treatment?
Downtime is minimal for most patients. You may experience:
- Mild tenderness or swelling for a few days
- Dressing or wound care if you’ve had surgery
Your clinician will explain any specific aftercare requirements.
Are keloid treatments painful?
Most treatments are well tolerated. Injections can cause some discomfort, but the area may be numbed beforehand. Cryotherapy and surgery are done under local anaesthetic, and most patients report only mild post-treatment soreness.
Can keloids come back after treatment?
Yes, keloids can recur, especially after surgical removal. That’s why we often combine surgery with injections or other follow-up treatments to reduce this risk. Your doctor will explain how recurrence can be minimised in your case.
How can I prevent keloid scars from developing?
If you’re prone to keloids, prevention is important. Here’s what you can do:
- Keep wounds clean to reduce the risk of infection, which can trigger keloid formation
- Apply silicone sheets or gel to healing wounds for 8–10 weeks
- Avoid unnecessary skin trauma, such as piercings or tattoos in high-risk areas
- Treat early – intervening within the first year of a keloid forming gives you the best chance of successful treatment
Can I claim my appointment on insurance?
Possibly. Some insurers will reimburse private dermatology consultations, but you’ll need to:
- Check with your insurer beforehand
- Bring any required documents to your appointment for the doctor to sign
Please note: all of our doctors are registered GPs (GMC GP Register), not consultants. Make sure your insurer is aware of this before you book.
