Mole checks / Mole mapping

Mole and blemish checks (also referred to as mole mapping) are absolutely vital to ensure anything concerning is found early.  In your 30-minute appointment, our clinicians meticulously examine every area of your body.  All our doctors are highly trained in Dermsocopy (microscopic analysis of skin lesions).  They will also take photographs of anything concerning for future monitoring.  The benefit of human analysis is the ability to discuss the findings with your clinician during your appointment.  They will talk you through your skin type, and how to monitor and check your own moles.

The older we get, the more likely to have some sort of abnormal growth, but this does not mean you have skin cancer, nor does it warrant surgical intervention.  In many cases it can be a form of pre-cancer in the cells, which can usually be treated very easily through cryotherapy (freezing) or topical creams – provided they are found early enough.

Our skin type and historical sun exposure can also impact our likelihood to be more or less susceptible to skin cancers.

What happens if we find something?

Any concerning moles can be addressed in-house for an extra fee, or we can facilitate an NHS referral for further assessment and monitoring.  This may include a referral to the NHS two-week-wait service, or a routine NHS appointment depending on the severity of any concerns.  Your clinician will be on hand to advise on your best pathway, and to explain your options and  put your mind at ease.  You do not need to be stuck in an expensive private route. In some cases, it can result in a swifter outcome to go back into the NHS. Our clinicians will ensure this happens without additional burden on you or your GP.

The team can also talk you through treatment options for skin tags, cysts, warts and keloid scars, plus various management plans for acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.

What our patients think

I was recommended to come here by my GP. Dr Anderson and her assistant Jasmine make a wonderful team. They both instantly put me at ease and carried out the procedure with great care, professionalism and reassurance, as I was nervous. I would not hesitate to return for any further skin issue and I highly recommend Oxona Healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.

Why is cyst removal more expensive than mole or blemish removal?

Cyst removal can be more complex as usually they are stuck down to underlying tissue. The cyst has to be teased away very carefully to ensure the entire cyst is removed and so that you get the best possible cosmetic result.

Do you treat children under the age of 18?

Yes, we can treat under 18s at both our clinics. However, for more invasive procedures or those requiring a certain level of pain tolerance, such as verruca freezing, we would recommend only over 10s.
