May marks Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention Month, a time dedicated to educating, empowering, and encouraging people to take simple but potentially life-saving steps when it comes to their skin health.

Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK and the good news is that many cases are preventable with the right knowledge and habits.

Why are Skin Checks Are So Important

Your skin is constantly changing, especially as you age. While many changes are completely normal, some can be early warning signs of skin cancer.

Checking your skin regularly helps you:

  • Notice new moles, marks or lesions
  • Track changes over time
  • Catch concerns early when treatment is most effective

Early detection is key, especially for melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer.

Skin Changes as We Age

As we get older, it’s completely normal to see:

  • New freckles or age spots
  • Changes in pigmentation
  • Thicker or more textured skin

However, it’s important to know the difference between normal ageing and suspicious changes.

The ABCDE Rule: How to Spot a Concerning Mole

A simple way to assess moles is the ABCDE rule:

  • A – Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
  • B – Border: Edges are irregular or blurred
  • C – Colour: Uneven colour or multiple shades
  • D – Diameter: Larger than 6mm or growing
  • E – Evolving: Any change in size, shape, colour or sensation

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to seek medical advice.

Different Types of Skin Cancer

Understanding the main types can help you stay informed:

  • Melanoma: The most serious form, can spread quickly
  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): Common and usually slow-growing
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Firm, scaly ulcerated or bleeding lump that grows quickly and can spread.

Skin Cancer Statistics You Should Know

  • Melanoma rates in the UK have increased by around 32% over the past decade
  • Around 2,300 people die from melanoma each year in the UK
  • Up to 9 in 10 melanoma cases could be prevented with proper sun safety

These figures highlight just how important prevention and early detection really are.

The Dangers of Sunbeds

Sunbeds are often marketed as a quick way to tan, but they carry serious risks.

  • Using sunbeds can increase melanoma risk by up to 60%
  • First use before age 35 significantly raises your risk
  • Sunbeds are classified as carcinogenic, alongside tobacco and asbestos

In the UK alone, sunbeds are linked to around 440 melanoma cases and 100 deaths each year.

Sun Safety: Simple Steps That Make a Big Difference

Protecting your skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these standard sun-safe rules:

  • Use SPF 50 sunscreen daily, even on cloudy days
  • Reapply every 2 hours, and after swimming or sweating
  • Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Seek shade during peak hours (11am–3pm)
  • Avoid sunbeds entirely

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Look for:

  • Broad-spectrum protection (UVA + UVB)
  • SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 is recommended
  • Dermatologically tested and reputable brands

Applying enough sunscreen is just as important as choosing the right one, most people don’t use enough.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

  • Apply 15–20 minutes before sun exposure
  • Use a generous amount, at least 7 teaspoons for full body application
  • Don’t forget commonly missed areas: ears, neck, scalp, hands, and feet
  • Reapply regularly

Where to Get Help

If you notice any changes in your skin:

  • Book an appointment with your GP
  • Seek advice from a dermatologist or consultant dermatologist
  • Don’t wait, early reassurance or diagnosis is always best
  • If needed to, you can be referred to the NHS 2 week wait
