Frequently asked questions
Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist at Oxona?
No, you don’t need a referral. You can book a private dermatology consultation directly with us online, by phone, or by email.
What conditions do you treat?
We treat a wide range of skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, skin tags, cysts, warts, mole changes, lipomas, keloid scars, and more. If a condition needs specialist hospital care, we’ll help arrange a referral.
Are your doctors consultants or dermatologists?
Our team is made up of specialist GPs. Each Oxona clinician is experienced in Dermatology or Women’s Health, holding additional post-graduate qualifications in their areas of expertise.
What’s the difference between a consultation and a procedure?
Your consultation is a chance to discuss your skin concern, get a diagnosis and explore treatment options. If a procedure is required, it will usually be scheduled separately after your consultation.
Can I get treatment on the same day as my consultation?
In many cases, yes. If the condition is straightforward and you’re happy to proceed, treatment may be offered on the day. For surgical procedures, a separate appointment is usually required.
Is minor surgery done in the clinic?
Yes. We offer minor skin procedures in-clinic under local anaesthetic. This includes mole removal, cyst removal, skin tag removal, and more.
Will I be given aftercare instructions?
Yes. After any procedure or treatment, we provide clear aftercare guidance and are available to answer follow-up questions.
Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?
Possibly. Some private insurers will reimburse your consultation or treatment. Please check with your provider first. Our clinicians are registered with the GMC as GPs, not consultants—some policies may require this distinction.
Where is the clinic located?
Our Oxford dermatology clinic is based in St Luke’s Hospital, Headington, with easy public transport links and parking nearby. We also offer appointments in Didcot, St Albans, Reading, and Chipping Norton.
Do you treat children under the age of 18?
Yes, we can treat under 18s at both our clinics. However, for more invasive procedures or those requiring a certain level of pain tolerance, such as verruca freezing, we would recommend only over 10s.
