What are Seborrhoeic Keratoses?

Seborrhoeic Keratoses grow on the top layer of skin are a result of multiple factors. These factors are thought to include, genetics, sun exposure and age-related changes. Although, research into the exact cause is limited.

Seborrhoeic Keratoses can vary in appearance, but they typically have the following characteristics:

  • Color: They can range from light tan to dark brown or black.
  • Texture: They often have a waxy or warty surface
  • Shape: They may be flat or raised, and are usually sharply outlined with a ‘stuck on the skin’ appearance.
  • Size: They vary from a few millimetres to several centimetres in size and tend to grow larger over time.

How do you remove Seborrhoeic Keratoses?

We will ensure your procedure is pain free. For small Seborrheic Keratoses we recommend you apply some EMLA cream, which you can buy at a pharmacy.  For larger ones, we will inject some local anaesthetic under the skin.  We also have ‘gas and air’ at our clinics.  This has a brief anaesthetic duration and works very well if you have larger numbers of tiny keratoses.

Most Seborrheic Keratoses are removed by hyfrecation. Hyfrecation (or electrocautery) uses a small needle with an electrical pulse which acts as a diathermy to burn the Seborrhoeic Keratoses. We also have an option of freezing them using Liquid Nitrogen. Your Oxona clinician will discuss the best options for you.

How much does it cost?

Our most cost effective appointments are usually 15 or 30 minute multiple blemish sessions during which we remove as many Seborrhoeic Keratoses (and skin tags/ minor lesions) as we can.  This might be as many as 20 small ones, or 4 – 8 large ones.  This appointment is £205 and 310, respectively.  You do need a pre-operative appointment in the first instance.

FAQs

How can I prevent the development of Seborrheic Keratosis

There is no known way to prevent the development of seborrhoeic keratoses, as they are largely influenced by genetics and age. However, early detection and treatment can help manage symptoms and improve the appearance of your skin.

Do I need to have a pre-op consultation?

Yes, all patients require a pre-op consultation prior to any surgical treatment. During this appointment, you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions, and the doctor will discuss the procedure and outcomes, while also providing an exact costing. The doctor may provide different options for surgical treatments, and these tend to have different outcomes. You are advised to take your time to consider the available options and best outcomes for you.

Can I claim for my appointment on insurance?

You need to speak to your insurer prior to your appointment. Some insurers will reimburse you for the appointment, but you will need to present any documentation at the time of your appointment for the doctor to sign. Please note that all our doctors are registered with the GMC on the GP register not the consultant register. Please ensure you make this clear to your insurers at the outset.
